A "carbon fossil" refers to a type of fossil where only the carbon residue of an organism remains after decomposition, creating a thin film or imprint on the rock that outlines the organism's shape, often preserving delicate details of soft-bodied creatures like leaves or insects; essentially, it's a fossil formed from the carbon left behind when other organic materials decay and are removed from the sediment.
